Our business idea began when our son, who was 6 at the time and an avid follower of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Matthew Evans, told us he would like to own a farm and make food to sell to people and make them happy.
At the time we were living in a small rental property in suburbia, and wondered how on earth we would ever be able to help him achieve his dream.
Five years later in February 2019 the first step of that dream began. We purchased our first churner, a second hand Mr Whippy machine, and began to experiment with flavours and recipes.
Once we locked in 9-10 flavours we saved up and bought our first “proper” churner with the ability to make 3L of hard scoop ice cream at a time. The process is time intensive, taking 18 mins to make a batch of ice cream and 35 mins to make a batch of sorbet, this is AFTER making the ice cream base and chilling it to fridge temps.
Then in October 2019, The Devil’s Own Ice Creamery launched with its first ever event, in a 3×3 marquee, using a rented display freezer and fold-up tables.
Since then we have weathered storms, both metaphorical and actual. We have navigated through COVID and all its restrictions and challenges.
We have grown from using a local high school kitchen to create our ice cream and attending events in a marquee and a box trailer, to having our own dedicated food van, and a bricks and mortar café space that doubles as our dedicated ice cream production area.
In time, we hope to save up and purchase more efficient machinery to streamline our production . . . but that will be a while away yet.
While the dream of owning our own farm to produce the milk for our own ice cream is still elusive, who knows what the future will bring!
With the incredible support from the local community we have created a brand that is destined to grow beyond the borders of our island state. We simply couldn’t do this without your support and are incredibly grateful for the part you play in purchasing our ice creams & sorbets, in dining at our cafe, and choosing our food van when we are out and about.
We, Martin & Emma Hamilton, along with some of our children and our dedicated team have worked incredibly hard to grow this business to what it is today. Our passion and enthusiasm shows through in every interaction you may have with The Devil’s Own Ice Creamery.
Together with our team we love to welcome you, get to know your name, and give you the best experience possible when you shop with us and when you celebrate birthdays and special events at the cafe with your family and friends.
There are big dreams afoot for The Devil’s Own Ice Creamery, so watch this space! Getting our ice creams into more supermarkets and restaurants is just the beginning.
Our sorbets took out 11 awards in the Fine Food Awards in 2022.
